As Communications Coordinator, Margaret supports writing and editorial needs across InterAction, including but not limited to the organizational blog, press releases, Monthly Developments, the website, papers and other publications, and event-related material. She also co-manages InterAction's social media portfolio, and manages the communications interns.

 
Prior to joining InterAction, Margaret temped with several nonprofits. She has a BA in English from the University of Maryland.

 

 

How Do You Make a Compelling Story?

It’s the nonprofit’s constant challenge: you know your work is good, important and worthy. So how do you convince everyone else? In the session “Video Storytelling for Social Change,” Catherine Orr and Elena Rue, co-founders of StoryMineMedia, teamed up with Joe Schroeder of RAFI and Lora Smith of the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation to share their successes and helped attendees brainstorm their own strategies.

World Refugee Day

June 20 is World Refugee Day, an annual United Nations day that brings attention to the situations facing refugees around the world. This year’s theme reflects refugees’ dilemmas and the difficult decisions they must make to ensure their safety.

According to the UN High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR), countries worldwide host over 43.7 million refugees and internally displaced people (people who flee their homes but remain within their own countries). Eighty percent of refugees are women and children.

Obama Names World Bank Nominee

President Barack Obama has nominated Dartmouth College president Jim Yong Kim as the next leader of the World Bank, the White House announced on Friday.

Dr. Kim, a physician born in Korea, was a co-founder of Partners in Health, and also led the World Health Organization’s department of HIV/AIDS. He has been president of Dartmouth College for nearly three years. If his nomination is successful, Dr. Kim will take over from outgoing World Bank President Robert Zoellick.

Haiti: Two Years After the Earthquake

Today marks the two year anniversary of the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake that devastated Haiti. Over the past two years, NGOs have worked in the country to help Haitians to rebuild. More than 100 of InterAction’s member organizations have contributed to emergency and reconstruction efforts, working on shelter, water, education, health, infrastructure and many other projects.

All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development

USAID and partners have launched a global competition, All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development, to find innovative solutions to advance children’s reading skills, particularly in low and lower-middle income countries. They invite organizations to submit proposals for awards of up to $300,000. Half of the awards are reserved for local organizations in identified countries.

World Bank’s Global Partnership for Enhanced Social Accountability

The World Bank has launched public consultations on a new partnership that aims to make development more effective. The partnership’s goal is to improve beneficiary feedback and bolster the capacity of civil society. The proposed Global Partnership for Enhanced Social Accountability (GPESA) is open for public comment through the end of February via an interactive website launched by the bank.

India assesses damage from last week’s cyclone

AlertNet reports that Cyclone Thane, which struck Tamil Nadu state on Friday, may have done worse damage to infrastructure than the Indian Ocean tsunami a few years ago. Aid agencies are still trying to access some areas so they can assess the situation.

InterAction calls for end to crackdown on CSOs in Egypt

 

InterAction released a statement today calling for an end to the crackdown on civil society organizations (CSOs) in Egypt after raids earlier this week on several nonprofit organizations’ offices.

"The harassment of nonprofit groups is unacceptable and counterproductive. A strong civil society which is able to operate freely and without fear of interference is essential, particularly at this time in Egypt's history," said Samuel A. Worthington, president and CEO of InterAction.

Honoring Our Fallen

Every year since 2006, InterAction has honored aid workers from among our member organizations who have lost their lives helping others. We display their names on a memorial that stays in our main conference room year-round.

Tonight, at the Forum 2013 Gala Banquet, we will read aloud the names of aid workers who died in the field in 2012 followed by a moment of silence. The updated memorial will be put back on display when we return to our office later this week.

When I talk about donating, volunteering or supporting a cause, I often get the perplexed response, “But you already work for a nonprofit.” My answer is always, “So?” Yes, I do communications work for InterAction. I try to share the stories of people halfway around the world, who I’ll never meet, and I hope that the work I do makes an indirect positive difference in their lives.

How, in today’s world of increasing urbanization, can we better prepare for increasingly frequent natural disasters and extreme weather events? One answer is to focus on communities, said speakers at a recent event dubbed Cities and Climate Change Adaptation: What We Can Learn About Resilience from Those Living on the Edge. When people living in a neighborhood trust and rely on each other enough, evidence shows that they work together and rebuild more quickly after a disaster.

Last Friday, I attended a great presentation for InterAction’s members’ communications directors by the Ad Council and the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) about a free online toolkit being created over the next several months on responsible giving. The Ad Council and CIDI are part of a coalition of organizations funding and coordinating the project, including InterAction.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the term “Out of the mouths of babes.” A lot of the things that adults either ignore or talk around, kids will zero right in on and ask about outright. This made a photo essay I saw on The Guardian’s blog this week particularly intriguing. It was about a program called Fotokids, founded by former war photographer Nancy McGirr, that puts cameras in the hands of kids.

When I was a kid and adults asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” my answers varied depending on my age: A princess. A marine biologist. A teacher. A writer. 

No one ever answers that question with, “A prostitute.” No one asksto be a prostitute. So why are they the ones who are always arrested and persecuted?
