As Communications Coordinator, Margaret supports writing and editorial needs across InterAction, including but not limited to the organizational blog, press releases, Monthly Developments, the website, papers and other publications, and event-related material. She also co-manages InterAction's social media portfolio, and manages the communications interns.

 
Prior to joining InterAction, Margaret temped with several nonprofits. She has a BA in English from the University of Maryland.

 

 

Remittances to Somalia face new hurdle

A U.S. bank in Minnesota has decided to close down accounts by Friday of companies that transfer money to Somalia, escalating the crisis facing many Somalis who depend on remittances from relatives abroad.

Remittances don’t just help the Somalis who receive them, they also help those who own the stores where the recipients spend money. If other banks decide to follow suit, the impact on the humanitarian crisis would be devastating.

Philippines begins recovery effort

After typhoon Washi hit the Philippines over the weekend, the government has begun recovery efforts. The latest casualty counts say that nearly 1,000 people have been killed.

InterAction will launch a new paper, “Country Ownership: Moving from Rhetoric to Action,” tomorrow morning with the Congressional Caucus for Effective Foreign Assistance. The launch will be at 2212 Rayburn House Office Building, from 9:30-11 a.m.

International Criminal Court chooses next chief prosecutor

 

The International Criminal Court has chosen the successor to Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo, whose term expires in June. Fatou Bensouda, a Gambian lawyer and Moreno-Ocampo’s current deputy, will take the reins.

The ICC has faced criticism that all of the cases brought before it are from Africa. Some hope that having an African in the chief prosecutor position will help to ease those tensions.

The chief prosecutor’s term of office is nine years. Bensouda’s will begin June 16, 2012.

DRC election results raise tensions, fears

Discrepancies involving high turnout in some areas and lost ballots in others have raised election monitors’ concerns in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Though the results say that the incumbent, President Joseph Kabila, won the election, opposition candidate Etienne Tshisekedi has used the concerns to declare himself the winner. The DRC Supreme Court is reviewing the results.

As part of their participation in this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, members of InterAction’s working group on gender-based violence in humanitarian settings have developed a new resource list to support that work being done by members and partners. 

InterAction annual CEO Retreat this week

More than 65 CEOs from InterAction are holding their annual retreat in Washington, D.C., this week, hearing from leading government officials and experts on the challenges of the day and how they affect the work of NGOs. It is also a time when leaders from the NGO community can network and find common solutions to the changing global aid and development landscape.

EU aid commissioner warns of worsening hunger crisis

European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva warns that the Horn of Africa crisis could continue through next summer. AlertNet reports that in a media briefing Tuesday, she also warned of looming hunger in the Sahel region of Africa.

Delhi government launches disaster preparedness campaign

The government of India’s capital city is launching a natural disaster preparedness campaign beginning Thursday, with a particular focus on earthquakes.

The campaign will include practice drills, workshops and seminars for many different groups, including schools and market associations. The campaign comes from the Disaster Management Act of 2005, and will focus on 12 emergency support functions crucial to the immediate disaster response.
