As Communications Coordinator, Margaret supports writing and editorial needs across InterAction, including but not limited to the organizational blog, press releases, Monthly Developments, the website, papers and other publications, and event-related material. She also co-manages InterAction's social media portfolio, and manages the communications interns.

 
Prior to joining InterAction, Margaret temped with several nonprofits. She has a BA in English from the University of Maryland.

 

 

Ivory Coast Constitutional Council ratifies Ouattara

The Ivory Coast’s Constitutional Council reversed its November 2010 decision and has ratified Alassane Ouattara as the official winner of the 2010 presidential election. The council’s president told press, “All decisions contrary to this one are null and void.”

Former president Laurent Gbagbo was arrested in April after waging a long and bloody campaign to keep power. He awaits trial in the north of the country.

Haiti cholera panel skirts question of responsibility

The panel appointed by the UN to find the cause of Haiti’s cholera epidemic concludes that contamination from the UN peacekeepers’ camp is “likely” and gives recommendations on how to avoid similar crises in the future. However, according to AlertNet, a UN spokesman “said that could not be seen as conclusive” and the panel cited “a confluence of circumstances” as the overall cause.

Recommendations for future peacekeeping missions include screening personnel from areas where cholera is present and giving them antibiotics before their departure.

MEMBER NEWS: Save the Children’s annual “State of the World’s Mothers” report

InterAction member Save the Children has released its annual “State of the World’s Mothers” report, which includes essays by prominent authors and gives annual rankings of the world’s best and worst places to be a mother.

The 2011 report finds that Norway is the best place to be a mother, and Afghanistan the worst; eight of the 10 lowest ranking countries are in sub-Saharan Africa. In Afghanistan, though it is embroiled in a war, expecting mothers are at least 200 times more likely to die in childbirth than from a bomb or a bullet.
