EU aid commissioner warns of worsening hunger crisis

European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva warns that the Horn of Africa crisis could continue through next summer. AlertNet reports that in a media briefing Tuesday, she also warned of looming hunger in the Sahel region of Africa.

Georgieva expressed concerns over “the flow of refugees from poor country to poor country,” and warned, “The Horn of Africa drought… is a wake-up call on how much more we need to do to anticipate and prevent droughts turning into killers. We cannot stop droughts but we can stop famines.”

She went on to say that many countries in the Sahel region are already taking precautions after erratic weather patterns that have affected crop yields, and that donor countries are also already taking action. Both of these steps will help ensure that the upcoming crisis is less fatal than the current Horn of Africa crisis.
