European NGOs Prepare for French G8 and G20 Summits

PARIS, FRANCE—I visited with five of our European allies as they prepare for the G8 Summit in May and the G20 Summit in November, which will take place in France. 130 NGO representatives are gathering in Paris from all over the world to plan advocacy, media and campaign strategies to influence the agenda of the two summits.  In preparation for the Global G8/G20 Working Group strategy meeting, I met with a number of our UK and French allies.

ActionAid UK, the British counterpart to InterAction member ActionAid US, is focusing on hunger, aid flows and accountability, and the financial transfer tax.  Christian Aid (UK) has organized a coaliton to "End Tax Haven Secrecy." Working  with a half dozen interested allies they plan to launch their web site on tax havens on February 7th, in advance of the G20 Finance Ministers' first of four meetings, which will be held February 18th.  This work will lead up to the November G20 Summit in Cannes, France.    CAFOD, the UK Catholic humanitarian aid agency, is focusing on economic justice, the development agenda, trade, and designing economic strategies around the needs of poor people.  CCFD, the  French Catholic development agency, is working on ending tax havens and tax avoidance, the international financial transfer tax, limiting agriculture price volatility, and promoting food security. Bond, our UK counterpart, is working to coordinate information and assist their members' work on the G8 and G20 Summits. They are focusing on the G20 Development Committee, G8 accountability, maternal, newborn, and child health, food security, and civil society access to the G8 and G20 leaders.   I will report on the Global G8/G20 Working Group's strategy meeting's progress later this week.
