American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee's Response to Hurricane Matthew Crisis

Operational Summary:

In the immediate wake of Hurricane Matthew's widespread destruction in Haiti, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) activated its vast network of local partners and began focusing its response on medical aid and other basic needs provision for beleaguered storm victims. JDC – which deployed extensive relief and rebuilding efforts aiding hundreds of thousands in Haiti following the devastating earthquake in 2010 – is helping provide medical supplies and medical team assistance in the Sud province through its partner Heart to Heart International.

JDC’s relief work in Haiti will focus on the hardest-hit areas in the south of the island where reports of torrential rains, flooding, and strong winds were accompanied by damage to homes, farming stock and land, and infrastructure like bridges. JDC remains in constant communication with its local civil society and NGO leadership contacts and long-term partners in Haiti to continue to assess needs and ensure the most vulnerable victims are cared for in an expedient manner.
