American Red Cross International Services's Response to The Ebola Crisis

Operational Summary:

As the deadliest outbreak of Ebola in recorded history continues to devastate Western Africa, the American Red Cross is supporting the ongoing relief efforts of the global Red Cross network with both financial and technical support. The Red Cross national societies in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are leading disease prevention educational and awareness efforts, providing psychosocial support and assisting in the management of dead bodies. In addition, the Red Cross has opened a 60 bed treatment center in Sierra Leone.

The American Red Cross  deployed two IT/telecommunications specialists and a satellite system to Sierra Leone to provide telecommunications support and internet to the Red Cross emergency health team and partner organizations in a remote area of the country.    The American Red Cross is coordinating Red Cross and partner organizations in information management and mapping support. In partnership with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, the British Red Cross and other partner organizations, the American Red Cross is also assisting with remote mapping for the affected countries. These maps are being used by relief organizations on the ground.
