Humanitarian concerns regarding the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia

The conflict in Yemen between the government of President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Houthis and their local allies has escalated significantly since the intervention by the Saudi-led coalition in March 2015, producing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. The United States and United Kingdom have been providing considerable support to the Saudis in the form of arms, logistical support and intelligence. Most recently, on August 9, the Obama administration approved a $1.15 billion sale of 153 tanks, large supplies of ammunition and automatic weapons, and servicing support to Saudi Arabia, despite extensively documented patterns of disrespect for international humanitarian law (IHL) and disregard for the protection of civilians on the part of the Saudi-led coalition.
