Humanitarian Policy & Practice Work Streams (April 2016)

The Humanitarian Policy and Practice (HPP) Team provides leadership and staff support for InterAction members involved in humanitarian action, including humanitarian policy, response, and advocacy. HPP provides member NGOs with a forum to coordinate efforts on behalf of those forcibly displaced or otherwise affected by conflict, natural disasters, and other situations of human suffering. HPP works to shape international humanitarian architecture, policy, and practice to save lives and alleviate human suffering.

HPP is guided by an Advisory Committee that meets quarterly and is composed of senior humanitarian operations and policy staff from member organizations. The Advisory Committee provides input and leadership on humanitarian policy and practice issues for InterAction. All InterAction members are welcome to participate in the working groups, workshops, and the annual HPP Community Meeting.

The work of the HPP team is divided into four main areas, each with its own distinct workstreams and committed staff members. Those areas are: Policy, Practice, Protection and Security.

A significant aspect of the HPP team’s work is representation of InterAction’s members and the humanitarian community in important policy discussions over how best to respond to conflicts and natural disasters. In the United States, InterAction advocates for the robust funding of humanitarian assistance accounts in the US budget; on the international level, InterAction participates in global conversations around humanitarian policy, funding, challenges to operational capacity, and humanitarian standards.
