Forum 2017 Young Professionals Summit

On Wednesday, June 21, InterAction will host its fifth annual Young Professionals Summit in conjunction with Forum 2017. The Young Professionals Summit tailors speakers, workshops, and networking events for professionals in the first half of their careers focused on international development and humanitarian relief. The summit is designed and implemented by young professionals and the programming is tailored specifically to fit young professionals’ interests and needs. Participants will be introduced to new skills to bolster their career, interact with NGO leaders, and be challenged as future leaders.

Young professionals are welcome to participate in the full 3-day Forum or only the Young Professionals Summit on June 21. Please see pricing below. Contact Emily Yox with questions.

Summit Schedule of Activities

9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Breakout Session – In Their Own Words: Perspectives from Recent Young Professionals

During this session, the audience will hear from 5 mid-level professionals working in development, humanitarian aid, advocacy etc. The goal of this session is to hear in their own words how successful young people maneuvered challenges, handled field experience (for some), and navigated their work environment. Each will speak briefly on how they got to where they are, but the majority of time will be spent in a Q&A breakout session. The speakers will be separated at different tables so participants to break into groups and ask questions of the speaker that matches their interests.

10:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Plenary Session - The Human Side of Technology

Innovation and breakthrough technologies are often cited as a key solution for more effective and more efficient ways to provide humanitarian relief or development outcomes. In some contexts, new technologies allow programs to reach farther, serve more people, and deliver cost saving outcomes. However, for every successful prototype that reaches scale, there are dozens of others designed to solve the wrong problem and ultimately fail. This plenary session will look at the opportunities and challenges of utilizing new technology to address community needs and respect human dignity.

12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
Young Professionals Networking Lunch

Participants in the Young Professionals Summit are invited to join executives from leading NGOs for a special networking luncheon

1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m
Breakout Session - Hiring Trends in Humanitarian Aid and International Development

The International Development and Humanitarian Assistance fields are ever-changing. That can make it difficult to determine how to maximize your success in finding and being hired for the right job. During this session, the speakers will focus on emerging trends in the field, predictions for the future, and the best graduate degrees to ensure that you are a right fit for the job you want.

3:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Breakout Session - Skills to Know: A Crash Course in Program Evaluation

In this session, the audience will be introduced to a hard skill within M&E. This is a basic overview of evaluation, and will be most valuable for those with limited experience. It will include an experiential, team based exercise that will help attendees learn what it means to make evaluative criteria, standards and judgments explicit. By evaluating chocolate chip cookies, attendees will get an introduction to 1) understanding the concept of evaluation logic and how it is the foundation for evaluation practice, 2) using evaluation logic, and 3) describing how evaluation logic applies to evaluating programs, policies, systems, and organizations.

4:45 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
Exhibit Hall & Artisan Trade Fair

Be sure to visit the exhibit booths in the exhibit hall to find out about the newest technologies and ground-breaking initiatives. Engage with our exhibitors and sponsors. Vendors will be selling a variety of arts and crafts made by indigenous artists from around the world during the Artisan Trade Fair. Click here to see a list of exhibitors.

4:45 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
