2018 G20 Summit

The 2018 G20 Summit will be hosted by Argentina on November 30 and December 1 in Buenos Aires. Argentina's vision for the summit is to build consensus around development that is both fair and sustainable. Argentina set three priorities for its Presidency, which will cut across the entire G20 agenda. These priorities are: (1) the future of work, (2) infastructure for development, and (3) a sustainable food future. Beyond these priorities, Argentina identified a variety of other "work streams" that it intends to pursue throughout its presidency, including:

  • Finance
  • Agriculture
  • Anti-corruption
  • Trade and investment
  • Development
  • Digital economy
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Climate sustainability
  • Energy transitions

The abovementioned work streams address Argentina's commitment to build on the work of past G20 summits, including strengthening financial governance and a sustainable financial system, cooperating on trade and investment, addressing gender inequalities, fighting corruption, and taking action on climate and clean energy.

In the lead up to the G20 Summit, G20 ministers will convene for a series of preparatory meetings to discuss issues relating to these work streams. Many of these meetings concluded with a statement – or communiqué – outlining commitments, recommendations, and areas of suggested action. Communiqués will be posted here following the meetings, at which point they become publicly available.

The summit also provides avenues for dialogue with civil society stakeholders, who will be organized into engagement groups in the areas of business (B20), non-governmental organizations (C20), trade unions (L20), the science and research community (S20), think tanks (T20), women (W20), and youth (Y20). In the same vein, Argentina has called for broader, strong, more geographically equitable engagement, and as a result has invited the chairs of the Caribbean Community, ASEAN, the African Union, and NEPAD to attend the summit.
