The 2013 Aid Transparency Index: MCC Tops the List, but Room for Improvement in U.S. Government

The 2013 Aid Transparency Index was released on October 24th by Publish What You Fund, and the news is good for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), but not as rosy for other U.S. agencies.

Remember to Breathe: Reflections on Training that Could Save Lives

We knew something was about to go down.

The lights went out. Voices from across the room shouted at us to “get down” and the air was pierced with the “dakka dakka dakka” of automatic weapons. Lisa and I hit the floor, hoping not to be seen under the classroom table. Next thing we knew we were blindfolded in a fast moving car. But I knew Lisa was next to me. We touched pinkies. Something to calm us and let the other know we weren’t alone. Just like they taught us.

A Tale of Two Cyclones

In October 1999, a massive cyclone slammed into the eastern coast of India, killing at least 10,000 people. A few weeks ago, a very similar cyclone, Phailin, struck the same region. The news coverage ahead of Phailin painted a frightening picture of a storm the size of Hurricane Katrina poised to wreak havoc on India and potentially repeat the grim toll of the 1999 storm. Yet when all was said and done, Phailin resulted in around 50 fatalities – just a fraction of what was feared.

Disater Risk Reduction: How Two Teachers Saved Their Village

On the eve of August 18, 2008, Chandra Kant was nervous and uneasy. He had been listening to the radio all day as torrential rain fell on his village — fearful that the worst was yet to come. He knew that if the rainfall did not stop, the nearby river would overflow and flood his village.

You probably don’t think about injuries sustained from cooking fires or acid attacks. But the truth is, severe burns are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developing countries – a crisis afflicting the poor that hardly anyone is talking about.

Pitfalls and Promising Potential – Using Mobile Technology in the Fight against Extreme Poverty in India

India boasts one of the fastest growing economies in the world, with annual gross domestic product growth at 5 percent or higher for over the last 30 years. But while the country’s economy races ahead, social indicators – including those for basic health – languish. Extreme poverty persists at unacceptable levels.  As compellingly presented by Drèze and Sen in An Uncertain Glory – India and its Contradictions, India’s impressive economic growth has not benefitted its 1.2 billion people equally.
