Muthoni Muriu is passionate about social justice and has been deeply invested in identifying gendered development solutions for the world’s most marginalized citizens.
A strategist with expertise in advocacy, gendered public policy, and international development, she recently led the development of Oxfam International’s Global Strategic Framework. As Oxfam America’s Senior Director for International Programs for the last 13-years, she led the design of innovative, effective programs that reduce poverty and inequality and is keen on the application of systems thinking to harness collaboration across the development sector.
Before joining Oxfam in 2001, Muthoni worked with various regional organizations in Africa, focusing on international policy and development. Her passion for social justice issues began when she witnessed poverty and injustice as a young activist in Kenya and has guided her through a 26-year career in international development. She is a fervent believer in continuous learning and leading through service. Muthoni holds a Bachelor of Science in Politics and International Relations from the London School of Political Science and Economics and a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
As an InterAction fellow, Ms. Muriu will conduct research on the future of the NGOs, focusing on organizational change within the NGO sector. Her research will enhance InterAction’s current NGO Futures initiative.
