Community Calls for senior leaders of U.S.-Based International Nonprofits

CEO Community Calls

Off-the-record calls, every other Friday.

InterAction’s CEO Community Calls convene senior leaders from across the U.S.-based international nonprofit community for off-the-record conversations on funding, policy, humanitarian response and sector trends. The series offers an opportunity to learn from peers, build relationships and stay informed on developments affecting our community and the people we serve.

The calls are off the record. After each one, we post a short recap here with the topic and a few themes. Names (other than the call leaders) and direct quotes are not captured.

Duty of Care in a Volatile World

Exploring how U.S.-based international nonprofits are strengthening duty of care practices to better protect staff, manage risk, and maintain operations in an increasingly complex global environment.

In an increasingly volatile global environment, marked by geopolitical instability, shifting travel restrictions, health crises, and complex regulatory requirements, Duty of Care is no longer a compliance exercise. It is a strategic, real-time capability that directly impacts organizational resilience and the safety and wellbeing of staff. CEOs will explore how organizations are evolving their Duty of Care practices to move beyond static policies toward dynamic, intelligence-driven approaches.

Friday, October 9 · Pull of the Future: How Values-Led Organizational Change Shifts Systems

Ruth Rhoads Allen (President/Chief Collaboration Officer, CDA Collaborative Learning) and Catherine McMahon (Organizational Development consultant) led our first Community Call. They shared lessons from the strategic affiliation between CDA and Local Capacities for Peace International, formalized in Nairobi in March 2026.

A few themes from the call:

  • Start with values and power, not structures and logos.
  • Use a futures lens: look at the pull of the future, the push of the present, and the weight of the past.
  • Design legal and governance arrangements that shift power.
  • Treat integration as a learning process.

Call 2 is Friday, October 23, at 3:00 p.m. ET. Come to the next call for the full readout.
