Empowering Civil Society

Civil society operating space is closing worldwide. Repressive governments have long sought opportunities to restrict civil society groups, including limiting the right to protest and creating onerous reporting requirements to operate legally, often using a security framework to justify these measures.

In recent years, international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) operating in democracies have also seen more restrictions from governments and third-party actors, including those using U.S. federal courts to further political aims.

In response, InterAction is working to create greater financial access for INGOs, advocating for sanctions reforms, recommending risk-based and proportional counterterrorism laws and policies, pushing back against targeted disinformation attacks against INGOs, and more.

To do so, we consult our Members about their experiences on the ground. In generating a cohesive voice of INGOs, InterAction coordinates outreach strategy and advocacy efforts. Our trusted voice and place at the table with influential policymakers gives Members a path to shaping policies that affect their operations.
