NGOs & Risk Management

NGOs that deliver humanitarian assistance often operate in high-risk that are insecure and politically constrained, creating difficult trade-offs. Organizations must balance the need to deliver life-saving assistance with the need to mitigate and, in some cases avoid, potential harm or risk to their staff and operations.

With the world changing in fundamental ways, there is a widespread sense that the environments in which NGOs operate are becoming riskier and more complex. To continue delivering quality programs, NGOs must strengthen their risk management capacities, learn to navigate uncertainty, and prepare for events that they cannot foresee—which is where we fit in.

InterAction helps Members strengthen risk management capacities by:

• Convening peer learning and expert discussions.
• Gathering evidence through ongoing research.
• Developing new tools and resources.
• Promoting good practice across all humanitarian stakeholders.

However, we do not do this on our own. Member organizations contribute to peer learning events, provide valuable expertise to core research, and offer feedback on new tools. Additionally, InterAction represents these perspectives in critical interagency forums.
