M&A And Nonprofits: Reflections On Plan International USA’s First Acquisition

The last few years, mergers and acquisitions have been common topics of discussion, but what does that mean for nonprofits? Plan International USA concluded its first acquisition about two weeks ago: we are taking on the assets of the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA). CEDPA, created almost 38 years ago, is an international NGO based in Washington, D.C. It was one of the very first organizations to focus specifically on issues relating to the development and advancement of women and girls.

Tackling Chronic Hunger Together In 2013

Chronic hunger and undernutrition will be on my radar in 2013 as InterAction’s members intensify their efforts to solve a problem that has no place in the 21st century.

Beyond The "Fiscal Cliff:" Congress And The 2013 Federal Budget

Many Americans are focused right now on the impending “fiscal cliff,” a package of across-the-board spending cuts and tax hikes set to take effect Jan. 1. But let’s not forget about that other impending fiscal decision that has been delayed for months – the 2013 budget. As those budget negotiations continue, it is critical that foreign assistance funding not suffer disproportionate cuts.

Foreign Assistance Cuts Will Cost Lives

Besides all the talk about the “fiscal cliff,” Congress still hasn’t passed any long-term spending bills for fiscal year 2013, which began on October 1, 2012.  While they have passed a stopgap “continuing resolution,” which would last until almost the end of March, that “CR” sets spending at essentially the same level as in 2012, so it is more of a “band-aid” solution than a final package. This means that funding for all sorts of programs – domestic, international, defense and otherwise – are stuck at last year’s spending levels.

Helping Gaza Children Cope

Eight days of airstrikes and bombings damaged administrative buildings, some homes and schools, water tanks and infrastructure. But the constant noise and strikes also provoked widespread fear and depression, most noticeably among Gaza’s children, who showed signs of behavior disorder.

The Fingerprints of Climate Change on Two Extreme Natural Disasters

In the last few months, West Africa and Haiti have suffered major disasters of epic proportions. In West Africa, both Niger and Nigeria experienced the worst flooding in decades, which has impacted over 2 million people. And, after a summer of unusual drought and flash floods, Haiti's agricultural sector suffered a fatal blow from Hurricane Sandy that has created a severe crisis for 1.5 million people.

InterAction Highlights Best Practices in Capacity Building

Three of InterAction's member NGOs last week presented on award-winning programs in several East African countries and Ghana, explaining their approaches to building the capacity of local organizations working in food security and agriculture. The organizations that presented at InterAction's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Building Resilience in the Horn of Africa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (December 3, 2012) - Two-year-old Lokko Godana drinks cow’s milk every morning. The milk is rich in proteins and vitamins, providing Lokko the nutrition she needs to supplement a daily diet of maize porridge. Lack of access to animal milk was the primary cause of her malnutrition last year when the drought slowed cow milk production in the southern pastoral areas of Ethiopia. With supplementary feeding for the cattle, milk production increased and Lokko’s health improved.

A New Milestone In Child Protection

Disasters impact the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world every year. Half of those affected are children, who often bear the biggest brunt of humanitarian crises. Nowhere have we seen this more clearly than in the wake of the January 2010 Haiti earthquake. As a result of the disaster, hundreds of thousands of children lost a parent, caregiver or other family members. They lost access to essential services and resources including food, water, shelter, education and health care.

Thankfuls Are All Around Us

One of the reasons I’m glad that #GivingTuesday came to life this year is actually pretty selfish on my part.
