Welcome to Our New Look!

InterAction’s strength is in its members and the work they do alongside communities globally. We hope our new website design reflects that.

You’ll notice some new features, including more information on our members and a clearer breakdown of what InterAction does to support them whether through vigorous advocacy efforts or in helping define best practices. We’ve reorganized the site in a way we think is easier to navigate and which shows off the breadth of our humanitarian and development work.

What Is Ghana Doing Right?

Ghana has long been seen as the “golden child” of West Africa, and not just because of its substantial gold deposits. It was the first country to tear away from the British in 1957, and in the last decade a new constitution has proved its democratic fervor successful. Now Ghana continues to glimmer on the golden coast, impressing the international arena by being on track to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

New School Provides Hope for Future in Haiti

(Anse-à-Pitres, Haiti) January 13, 2012 — Two-hundred and forty students in this Haitian community have moved from a dilapidated building and outdoor desks protected only by tarps to a new school complex.

Although public education is ostensibly free in Haiti, the biggest challenge for parents is being able to buy their child one pair of shoes, two school uniforms, books and notebooks, and to be able to pay the $100 fee — $10 per month during the school year — to sustain the operations of the school.

A Different Kind Of Day

I found myself in a hot, dusty camp on the border with Ethiopia, where Somalis who had fled their homes because of violence and the worst drought in 60 years were living. It’s there that I met Habiba.

Pain and Hope: An Aid Worker’s Reflections from Typhoon Washi

Over a week has passed since Typhoon Washi struck Northern Midanao—my home.  I feel I’ve had the busiest hours of my career as a worker with the non-profit organization World Vision.  I knew there was a typhoon coming, and I was even monitoring our areas.

NGOs Can and Should Help South Sudan Along the Path to Peace and Prosperity

Barely mentioned at South Sudan's international engagement talks this week, NGOs have spent decades forging ties in the country. But they will have to adjust to new realities.

The Evolution Of U.S. Foreign Assistance

“Country ownership” has become a popular term used in discussions about the future of U.S. foreign assistance. But its definition shifts depending on who you’re talking to. InterAction’s just released policy paper, “Country Ownership: Moving from Rhetoric to Action,” provides a clear and easy to understand definition that all who care about international development should consider using.

Responsible Giving

Last Friday, I attended a great presentation for InterAction’s members’ communications directors by the Ad Council and the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) about a free online toolkit being created over the next several months on responsible giving. The Ad Council and CIDI are part of a coalition of organizations funding and coordinating the project, including InterAction.
