InterAction Responds to Proposed Cuts in the President’s FY2027 Budget Request
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 3, 2026 — InterAction has serious concerns with the President’s FY2027 budget request, which proposes a 30% cut to the State Department and international programs. The proposal includes a 45% reduction in global health funding, a 25% cut to humanitarian assistance, the virtual elimination of Food for Peace, and a near-total withdrawal of U.S. support for the United Nations and other key multilateral institutions. Only a few months ago, congressional Republicans rejected similar cuts in the FY2026 budget.
InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international nonprofits, believes the proposal would weaken bipartisan efforts to ensure U.S. foreign assistance is delivered effectively, efficiently, and as locally as possible—at a time when instability abroad is increasingly linked to risks at home.
“This budget is deeply disappointing and inconsistent,” said Tom Hart, president and CEO of InterAction. “The administration says it wants to focus foreign assistance on saving lives, yet it proposes severe cuts to the very accounts that do just that. And if safeguarding the American people is truly a priority, there are few investments more critical than preventing global infectious disease. We look forward to working with congressional leaders and the administration in the months ahead to ensure these vital, high impact investments are protected.”
“There is a long, bipartisan record in Congress of supporting smart, accountable foreign assistance that works with local partners and delivers results,” Hart said. “We urge lawmakers to continue that leadership and sustain America’s engagement internationally, as they have time and again.”
InterAction’s Choose to Invest framework outlines the minimum funding levels needed to sustain core humanitarian, global health, food security, and development efforts—benchmarks the FY2027 request fails to meet.
