Statement on the Trump Administration’s Rescissions Request

WASHINGTON, D.C. – InterAction released the following statement on the administration’s rescissions request sent to Congress.

“The administration’s request to rescind over $8.3 billion in foreign assistance funds previously appropriated by Congress represents a profound departure from America’s longstanding bipartisan commitment to global leadership. The administration claims these cuts only target wasteful spending and yet provide examples totaling less than 1% of its proposed cuts.

“The administration is turning its back on life-saving foreign assistance programs both the President and Secretary of State say they want to continue, including PEPFAR and humanitarian assistance. These cuts would condemn countless vulnerable women, children, and families to preventable suffering and death—and already has. The closing of clinics in South Sudan caused at least five children with cholera to die while trying to access treatment. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, entire communities were cut off from water, food, and healthcare. Stories like these continue to emerge from across the globe.

“For decades, both Republicans and Democrats have championed American foreign assistance because it represents our deepest values as Americans and advances national interests. It’s not about politics—it’s about American compassion, influence, and security.

“We ask Congress to retain America’s global leadership by standing by their previous funding allocations and voting no on the administration’s rescissions package. We call on the administration to spend money allocated for foreign assistance on life-saving programs they say they champion.”
