HIV/AIDS (State and USAID)

Description

HIV/AIDS programs collaborate and partner with host country governments, civil society, multilateral institutions, private sector groups, and other stakeholders to combat the AIDS epidemic. The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) targets investments through data-driven decision-making, focusing resources on specific geographic areas and populations.

Use of Funds

Programs support multi-sectoral responses to reduce widespread impacts of HIV, including through technical assistance; prevent, test, and treat HIV; and research, develop, and disseminate new technologies. This includes microbicides and an HIV vaccine.

Justification

• Approximately 4 million people are living with HIV, 1.7 million of whom are children under the age of 15.
• As of September 30, 2022, U.S. assistance has saved more than 25 million lives and provided life-saving antiretroviral treatment to nearly 1 million patients.
• As of September 30, 2022, more than 5 million babies were born HIV-free to HIV-positive mothers thanks to PEPFAR. PEPFAR programming has also provided critical care and support for 7 million orphans, vulnerable children, and their caregivers.
• As of September 30, 2022, PEPFAR supported HIV testing services for nearly 7 million people and enrolled 1.5 clients on a drug regime to prevent HIV infection.
