Description

Established by Congress, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an independent, nonpartisan institution charged with increasing the nation’s capacity to prevent, mitigate, and help resolve international conflict without violence. For over 35 years, USIP has helped communities avoid and resolve conflict with peacebuilding training and support.

Use of Funds

USIP supports trainers, mediators, and researchers who work in conflict zones and Washington, D.C. by providing resources, education, and analysis on conflict prevention and resolution.

Justification

• USIP helps parties lay the groundwork for the cessation of hostilities and sequence realistic steps from ceasefire to disengagement to peace agreement. Funding helps prevent conflict and maintain peace while also helping countries build capacity to resolve conflicts.
• USIP plays a unique national security role, assisting the broader U.S. Government efforts to prevent violent conflict and extremism, and is currently implementing more than 300 programs and initiatives in 16 countries. Current priorities lie in Afghanistan, Burma, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Tunisia.
• USIP is focused on four priority areas: strategic rivalry; violence and extremism in fragile states; global shocks; and American peacebuilding.
  • USIP is committed to mitigating the risk of conflict in places where “China and Russia are attempting to expand their cultural, economic, military, and political influence.”
  • USIP is helping to stabilize distressed communities in Central America’s Northern Triangle through dialogue between police services and civil society and facilitating inclusive consultation between the government and its citizens in high-migration districts.
